Айдол родился Пусане, крупном Южно Корейском городе, откуда эмигрировал в штаты. Родители с двумя детьми, дочерью и маленьким сыном остановились в городе Бредфорд, в Массачусетсе.

Прослушивание парень прошел в Нью-Йорке. Ему на тот момент было всего 17 лет и позиционировался он как модель. Но судьи решили проверить юношу на прочность и попросили его спеть и станцевать. На этом Тек Ён не подкачал и прошел конкурс, после которого и вернулся в Корею.
На родине, его первым испытанием стало шоу «Выживание суперзвезды», на котором парня слили. К счастью он не сдался, поняв что у него действительно есть дар. Второй попыткой стало шоу «Hot Blood Men» в 2008 году, в котором, он вместе с 13 трейни, показывали свои репетиции.
Помимо работы над музыкальной карьерой, юноша продолжал обучение в сфере делового администрирования. Кроме родного корейского и английского, молодой человек свободно владеет японским, испанским и китайским языками.
